Stonerock, Robert F., Jr., a physician, singer, eco-warrior and lover of the arts, died Saturday, Oct. 10 of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 68.
An Orlando native, Dr. Stonerock attended Delaney Elementary School, Cherokee Junior High School and Boone High School and was an Eagle Scout. He graduated as salutatorian, with honors, from Rollins College; earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University and followed with five years of postgraduate studies at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He married Marty O'Connell at Rollins in 1982, and their daughter Chelsea was born in 1986.
He was a nephrologist and internist in private practice for 21 years and former chair of the intensive care unit at ORMC. He worked as a sub-investigator at Orlando Clinical Research Center until earlier this year.
Dr. Stonerock was a tireless environmental activist and a self-educated authority on renewable energy. He co-founded ECO-Action, Inc.; co-owned the ECO-Store; and was secretary-treasurer of Clean Power Engineering Company, president of the Florida Renewable Energy Association and a board member of AquaFiber Technologies. His house was the first in Orlando with photovoltaic solar panels on its roof and the first to be grid-tied with Orlando Utilities.
An avid arts enthusiast, Dr. Stonerock sang for more than 30 years with the Messiah Choral Society and served as its president. He was a longtime, active and beloved board member at Mad Cow Theatre, where the Zehngebot-Stonerock Theatre is named in part for him and his wife Marty.
Survivors include wife Marty, daughter Chelsea and sister Dr. Sue Stonerock, family members Peter and Bonnie O'Connell, John and Audrey O'Connell, James O'Connell and numerous nieces and nephews, and many devoted friends. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, 2PM, at the Rollins College/Knowles Memorial Chapel, 1000 Holt Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789. Arrangements have been made through Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home. Contributions may be made in Dr. Stonerock's name to Mad Cow Theatre or the Messiah Choral Society.
