CMSgt ret, Robert A. Hughes Passed away Saturday June 20, 2015.
Bob was born September 01, 1931 in Grand Falls, New Brunswick Canada, to John and Martha Hughes. A veteran of both Korea and Vietnam, Robert served his country for thirty years (1948-1978) in the US Air Force with honor and distinction rising to the rank of Chief Master Sargent (E-9) and earning many metals and citations including Army Good Conduct, Air Force Good Conduct, Air Force Commendation, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Expert Marksman Sharpshooter, and the Air Force's Bronze Star. He enlisted at a time when the Air Force was changing from piston driven to jet engines and attended one of the first jet engine schools. He was assigned to various branches of the Air Force including the Military Air Command (MAC), Tactical Air Command (TAC), and the Strategic Air Command (SAC). These assignments would take him and his family to live across the US and overseas to include Alaska, New York, Maine Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, Montana, California, Florida, England and Germany. These deployments fostered many lifelong friendships. When asked what he thought about joining the service at an early age he said "it was great they feed us three times a day." After retirement from the Air Force he went to work for Sewell Plastics in Orlando for ten years and while there he went to collage earning a Master's degree in Business Administration. Robert became active in his community devoting his time to his church. Robert was a Christian and devout Catholic and he performed various functions at St. James Cathedral in Orlando. Robert was a humble man, with a great work ethic which he passed on to his children. Robert was preceded in death by his mother and father, Martha and John, his wife Venerande, and his brother Don. He is survived by his daughter Lynn Lund of Manassas, VA, son Robert and his wife Sandy of Groveland, Fl, sisters Marlene and Marylou, grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Sarah, and Sean, and great-grandchildren Maddy, Easton, Kate, and Luke and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bob will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St. James Cathedral on July 02, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. and will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
