Major Richard G Overman Sr was born on January 23, 1918, in Swayzee, Indiana to Mark and Adeline Overman. He passed away in Edgewater, Florida on December 10, 2024, at the age of 106 years. He is survived by his two sons, Richard G Overman Jr and John Flynt Overman. He is proceeded by his wonderful wife Norma Louise Overman and his daughter Mary Elizabeth Maloney. Major Richard also had six amazing grandchildren, with many great grandchildren.
During his high school years, Major Richard was well known for being a star athlete. After his high school years, he enlisted in the Army Airforce in 1940, and served in World War II in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. After the war he continued his military career in the Office of Special Investigations (OSI), where he began honing his skills as a Police Investigator. He received numerous awards and decorations from the Air Force, which included the Air Force Commendation Medal. Durning this time he became a skilled Polygraph Examiner. Major Richard had a very rewarding career with the Air Force and retired in 1961 and began his second career journey as a Deputy Sherriff with the Orange County Sherriff's Office, where he rose through the ranks and became a Major.
During his career time in the police force, Richard was recognized for his bravery with rescuing a woman and a child from a hostage crisis event. His heroism did not and will not be forgotten. After his retirement from the Orange County Sheriff's Office, he continued his law enforcement career as a hand-writing expert. Major Richard will be remembered as a man of extraordinary qualities. He was intriguing, outstanding athlete, patriot, loyal husband to his wonderful wife of 63 years. He was also he dedicated father and grandfather to the rest of his family. Major Richard legacy will live on forever and those who knew him are blessed to have known him.
Funeral arrangements will be held at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road Orlando, FL 32806. on Thursday December 19th, 2024, from 1230 pm - 2pm, with a service beginning at 1pm with Pastor Ron Shafer, followed by a burial at Greenwood Cemetery,1603 Greenwood Street, Orlando, FL 32801.
