Richard Hunter

September 17, 1937 — December 4, 2022

Richard Hunt Hunter of Orlando, Florida and Worthington, Ohio, passed away on December 4th, 2022, of natural causes. He was 85.

Richard was born on September 17, 1937, to Roscoe Theodore Hunter and Edna Leahey Hunter and grew up in Blue Island, Illinois along with his brother, Robert Hunter (deceased.) Richard attended Antioch College where he studied theatre and met his wife of 65 years, Judy Potter Hunter. He was loving father to son Ted Hunter (Jennifer,) and daughter Erin Hunter Sills (Andy, deceased); and grandfather to Justin Hunter (Maggie) and Shelby Hunter Leitch (Jacob).

Richard had a lifelong passion for computer technology, having started his career at SDC at a time when computers were rooms one walked in to and “computer bugs” were literally insects that disrupted the electronics. He moved on to NCR in Dayton, Ohio where he spent 17 years before retiring to take over the Potter family lumber yard in Worthington, Ohio. In that capacity, Richard was named 1993 Business Person of the Year by the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce and became president of the Ohio Lumberman’s Association in 1996.

Richard’s many diverse interests included fast cars, motorcycles, soccer, live theater, cats, model trains, wine, drums, and live music. Richard’s greatest passion was aviation, earning his private pilot’s license in 1974 and logging thousands of miles, serving as President of the Mound Flying Club in Centerville, Ohio. Combining his sales acumen and his love of aviation, he played major roles in the renowned Dayton International Air Fair in 1976.

As a born leader with a passion for community service, Richard served his town of Worthington, Ohio for over 22 years in multiple roles including Vice Chairperson and then Chairperson of the Municipal Planning Commission and Architectural Review Board. He was an active Rotarian through four decades with both Rotary Club of Dublin – Worthington Ohio and the College Park Rotary Club and was honored as Rotarian of the Year in 2014.

A celebration of life will be held for Richard on December 21, 2022, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wellesley Club Room in the Wellesley Condominiums, 2305 Edgewater Drive, Orlando, FL.
