Nicholas Zaharis

The world lost a beautiful soul Thursday, October 11, 2018, and God took him home. He was truly an amazing person. Nicholas Zaharis, was the son of Greek immigrants.
As a young child in New York City he struggled to learn English as a second language. As a boy, he would go see the Yankee games and was able to see Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and so many other greats play the game of baseball at Yankee Stadium.

During WWII he was a B-17 Navigator and Bombardier, flying countless bomb runs over Nazi Germany. Nick was a true war hero and helped the Allies defeat Hitler, liberating Europe, and freeing the world from the Third Reich, making him one of the last living relics of his kind. He was a military patriot to the core, a retired Air Force LtCol, and a member of the 306th Bomb Wing at McCoy Air Force Base where he flew B-52's in the Vietnam War. His generation was special, they were tough as nails and they just don't make them like that anymore. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the State of Florida for several years. He had many interests, however, he enjoyed sports of all kinds. His forte was golf.

Nick survived the Great Depression and after meeting his wife Lois they created a great, beautiful, family.

Nick taught us so much during his time here and shared many war stories and things about life with all his great knowledge and wisdom. He spent time with each of us, teaching us many invaluable life lessons that we will pass on to our future generations.
He impacted so many people during his time here and got to see all of his grandkids grow into incredible adults and parents. He spent quality time with each of his beautiful, great-grandchildren and made a lasting impact on their lives as well.

Grampy you were one in a million, we will always remember our talks and moments we shared together, it hurts to say goodbye but we know we will reconnect with you in the afterlife. Grampy, thank you for everything, we love you more than words.
We can smile knowing you have been reunited with the love of your life again and you and Granny can now watch over us and guide us through life.

Nick was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lois Spiro Zaharis, and survived by daughter Karen Zaharis LaMirande (William), son Jeffrey Alan Zaharis (Debra), four grandchildren, Brian LaMirande (Meredith), Nicole Williams (Richard), Bradley Zaharis, Erica Evans (Steven), and seven great-grandchildren.

A viewing will take place at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, FL, on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 10:00am until time of funeral service at 11:00am. Interment immediately following at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society or the Wounded Warriors Project.
