Myra Glenette Mesa, 96 of Orlando, Florida, went to her eternal rest Saturday, August 19, 2023 peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family. Glenette was born August 9, 1927 in Madison, Georgia to Glenn and Annie Whitworth, the oldest of four children. Glenette moved to Orlando in September 1946 and began working at Morrison’s Cafeteria where, in January 1947, she met the love of her life, Mario John (“Johnny”) Mesa, Jr. Johnny & Glenette were married on June 4, 1947, and remained happily married for 64 years until Johnny’s death in August 2011. Glenette was “Mama” to her three girls and “Memaw” to her three grandchildren & seven great-grandchildren.
Glenette became a “Navy Wife” in July of 1950 when Johnny joined the United States Naval Reserves and she supported him in his naval career until his retirement in July of 1983. She was an avid bowler, and was in a bowling league at Colonial Lanes for many years. Glenette was involved in the PTA at Blankner Elementary School and served as the Hospitality Chair for several years. After meeting Father David Page in 1973, Glenette became a member of St. James Parish in April of 1974. She was a CCD teacher for 10 years and also served as an usher, alongside Johnny for over 30 years until her “retirement” in 2016. She was a member of the Prime Timers and volunteered countless hours over the years to St. James at various events. She enjoyed gardening and reading.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny; her parents, Glenn & Annie; and her siblings, Ruben, Rufus & Joyce. Survivors include daughters, Lisa Kay Mesa, Laurie Roseann Mesa (John Deep), and Lana Jean Mesa Woods (Bill); four grandchildren, Kirstyn Cullum (Chad Sullivan), Glenn Deep, Katelyn Cullum (Kenny D’Amato) & Bobbi Jo Woods; seven great-grandchildren, Mason, Stella, Abbie, Brayton, Maverick, Madison & Morgan; as well as three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, Florida 32806.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, September 1, 2023 at St. James Catholic Cathedral, 215 North Orange Avenue, Orlando, with Father Miguel Gonzalez officiating. A burial will follow at 12:30 PM in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
