Emily Barr Herrington
Born on January 17, 1931, in Leesburg, Florida, Emily entered this world with a bright smile and twinkle in her eye both of which brought great joy to others throughout her 92 years. When others would search for words to explain what Emily was like, it was often stated she exuded southern charm but almost unanimously it was concluded the best word for Emily was 'kind.' She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida in 1953, a time in U.S. history when only approximately 1.2% of women went to college. While attending college, she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority whose motto was "We Live for Each Other." Following graduation, Emily worked as a draftsman at Orlando Utilities Commission and in ad creation at Dickson and Ives. In 1957, Emily married her college sweetheart, after he returned from military service as an Army paratrooper. They soon started a family and had five children, an industrious boy and four spirited girls. Tragically, they heart wrenchingly lost their boy to leukemia when he was 14 years old. Emily and Harry enjoyed 55 years of marriage, had a stilt house miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, and ran crazy schedules shuttling all their kids to different sports practices and competitions. Emily volunteered with the Woman's Auxiliary Orange Memorial Hospital and worked at White Laboratories and Howard Wholesale. Emily spent a life epitomizing her sorority's motto to live for others, always turning focus away from herself toward the interests of others. She had a way of making you feel special. She will be deeply missed. Her children were blessed to call her "Mom" (AKA "Emie"). Emily passed peacefully on June 25, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Herrington, Jr. and her son, Harry Randolph "Randy" Herrington, III. She is survived by her four daughters Holly Eby (husband Kevin), Laura Herrington, Allison Dolan (husband Larry) and Lesley Valencia (husband David) and her six grandchildren Savannah, Brandon, Kayla, Randy, Claire and Grace.
