Elaine Sloan, 89, a resident of Orlando, FL for 59 years, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2015, at Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Port Orange, FL surrounded by her loving family. She was born Anna Elaine Forrest in 1926, in Winterville, NC to Otis H. and Selma Forrest, the 10th of 11 children. Elaine grew up in Winterville, NC and was a graduate of Winterville High School and East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University at Greenville, NC. She taught math and business education for five years in North Carolina, two years at Ocoee High school and 23 years at Colonial High School in Orlando, FL. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Orlando, Orange County Retired Educators Association, Red Hat Society and Florida Life Care Residents Association (FLiCRA). Elaine loved her church, socializing with friends and family, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, painting, playing card games with her Orlando Lutheran Tower neighbors, and margaritas! Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Lewis T. Sloan, who was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. Also preceding her are brothers Ola, Rufus, Linwood, Bill and Al and sisters Nonie Iverson, Ellen Strahan, Adelle Wall, Beatrice Little and Gretchen Kirk. She is survived by her son Ted Sloan and his wife Kristin of Port Orange, FL, daughter Susan Sloan and her husband Fritz Postlethwaite of Boca Raton, FL, and daughter LuAnne Sloan of Sacramento, CA. She has four surviving grandchildren: Elizabeth Watkins, Andrew Sloan, Virginia Horton and Karen Sloan and one great-grandchild Lewis Horton. A viewing will be held at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, 2811 Curry Ford Road, on Thursday, July 2, from 5pm-8pm. Funeral service will be on Friday, 10am at Orlando Lutheran Towers.
