She was born January 15, 1950 in Burlington, Vermont to Samuel Slayter ("Dee") and Lois Isabel Laird, and was a younger sister to Lauren Laird Stricklen. After living in Orlando part-time in the Lake Davis neighborhood for most of her early childhood, in 1958 when Debby was 8 her family moved to Orlando permanently and purchased a home on Antigua Drive in the Bel Air neighborhood. Growing up, she attended Delaney and Kaley Elementary, Cherokee Junior High and Boone High School, and established a tight-knit circle of childhood friends with whom she would remain lifelong friends until her last days. She lived in Orlando most of her life, with a few periods of exception. She attended and graduated from Florida State University in 1972, where she met her husband of 42 years, Reed Robinson Clary III, and whom she married on May 6 1972. She lived in Miami with her husband from 1973-1979, moving back to Orlando for 7 years and then, in a move with her husband which was typical of their spirit of adventure, moved with two small children to West Berlin from 1986-1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Thereafter, she lived in Orlando for the remainder of her life.
Her professional career was spent as a dedicated educator, working as both a teacher and a guidance counselor. For approximately the final 20 years of her career, she worked at Boone High School, the high school from which she herself graduated, as well as both her sons. She worked at Boone first as a Social Studies teacher and, after she received her Masters Degree in Counseling from UCF in 2001, later as a Guidance Counselor. She poured tremendous passion and energy into her profession, remembered by many as their favorite teacher or as key to them attending college.
Debby is survived by her mother Lois, husband Reed Robinson Clary III, two sons Reed Robinson Clary IV (36) and Scott Samuel Clary (34), her sister Lauren, two daughters-in-law Kim Trivitt Clary and Jeannie Magri Clary, and four grandchildren (to whom she will forever be known as "DD") Joanna Laird Clary (5), Kathleen Lillian Clary (3), Reed Robinson Clary V (6 months), and Anne Isabelle Clary (6 months). She is pre-deceased by her father Dee.
Debby was an active and caring person who loved to travel, having visited far-flung places in her life such as Kenya, Africa and Manila in the Philippines, and spend time at her second home in New Smyrna Beach, enjoying long walks on the beach, reading and the sunsets. She is deeply loved and will be intensely missed by her family, her many friends and the countless people whose lives she touched both personally and professionally.
Funeral Services will be held this Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke's at 1:00, the Church in which she was raised, raised her family, and was an active and involved member her entire adult life. Her ashes will be interred in the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, Debby wished, and the family is requesting, for donations to be made in her honor to the St. Luke's Altar Guild.
