Cora Miller

June 1, 1915 — September 4, 2015

Cora Bowen Miller, born on June 1, 1915, passed away on September 4, 2015 at the age of 100 years and 3 months. Her husband Ray preceded her in death in 1997.

A native of Hornell, NY, Cora graduated from Geneseo Normal & Training School (now State University of New York at Geneseo) in 1935, and received her BS degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, NJ in 1956.

She met Ray A. Miller, of Livonia, NY during her days at Geneseo (college sweethearts) and was married on June 30, 1937 in Hornell, NY. Son, Roger was born in 1942, and nephew Barry joined the family in 1958 at the age of 10.

She taught school, including in a one-room schoolhouse in New York state, and additionally taught in Rockville Center, NY. She also volunteered her time in schools and libraries throughout her life.

Cora and her family moved to York, PA in 1958 when Ray accepted the job to develop and build a four-year college named York College of Pennsylvania. Cora served as hostess for many college functions and activities during their 18 years in York. She served as a Director for the YWCA and was a long time member of Delta Kappa Gamma society, including president of the Beta chapter. They retired to Orlando, FL in 1976 and were members of First United Methodist Church of Orlando. Cora spent her final years at Westminster Towers. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, playing the piano, and playing bridge until she was 98.

She is survived by son Roger L. (Carole) Miller of Gainesville, VA; grandchildren Tamara (Christopher) Guthrie of Annapolis, MD, Timothy L. Miller of Springfield, VA, Andrew Townsend of Silver Spring, MD and 3 great grandchildren; Barry (Kathy) Bowen of Glen Mills, PA, Jennifer (Rick) Lohkamp of Wilmington, DE and Ryan (Kate) Bowen of Charlotte, Vermont, and their 6 children.

She is survived by niece Sandra (Ralph) Wisz of Niles, IL and nephews Roland (Lisa) Bowen of Mesa AZ, Alan Bowen, of Mesa, AZ and their 4 children.

Also surviving are nieces Judy (Rodney) Chambliss of FL, Suzanne (Don) Crawford of NY, Aletha (Robert) Guy of Dansville, NY, Nancy (Dave) Rauen of Ontario, NY, Ann Marie Resnick of FL, Vicki Taylor of Jacksonville, FL, Patricia (Don) Vershay of Snyder, NY, nephews Larry Miller of FL and Thomas (Kathleen) Miller of MA and their children.

A brother, Grey Bowen, preceded her in death in 1979.

A Celebration of Cora's life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Orlando,142 E. Jackson St, Orlando, with Rev. Emily Edwards officiating.
